PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS: WE’RE MAKING STRIDES THIS SEMESTER

Brothers,

I write to you again as a proud president of the Lambda Chapter. In the previous edition of the Tiger FIJI, I stated the goals we had for our chapter, and how enthusiastic we were to get started. I have only one word to describe our first semester: Success! And—although it is not over yet—we have made huge strides this semester and have our sights aimed for even higher endeavors in the future.

Philanthropically, this semester alone, we have raised $2,500 for worthy causes (the Putnam Humane Society and the Wounded Warriors Project) through two phenomenal events. Bark-B-Que was once again hosted with Kappa Alpha Theta and provided live music, food, and a professional Frisbee dog team. For Pumpkin Bash we had multiple teams compete to become the “Pumpkin Bash Champion.” Josh Levine and I also offered—during a break in the action—to have pies thrown at us for anyone who wanted to provide an extra donation.

On campus we have brothers constantly involved in various activities. Dave Gordon and Drew Casey started the DePauw Pops Orchestra, Oley Yager is getting more recognition as a standup comedian, and many of our senior brothers are actively searching (or have already found) employment for next year. Many are currently applying to move forward onto graduate school. Our eyes are set to February for recruitment, when we hope to bring in another great pledge class and strengthen our bonds of brotherhood.

Although this may be the last time I write to you all as president of the Lambda Chapter, I couldn’t be happier with my brothers and what they’ve accomplished. We’ve come a long way, and instead of becoming passive, I am constantly hearing of new personal and fraternal goals that everyone wishes to achieve. It saddens me to know that my time at DePauw is past the halfway mark, but I see becoming a FIJI as my most rewarding collegiate decision, and I wouldn’t trade my brothers, or my memories for anything. I am truly proud to be a brother in Phi Gamma Delta at the Lambda Chapter, and I wish for our legacy to always climb higher and never falter.

Fraternally,
Matthew C. Skiba ’16
